1st Division Game - Athletic V Blackwood

Another week, another Athletic match. 2nd game I go to and Athletic suffer their 1st defeat of the year. Not the greatest game of Rugby ever seen in Carmarthen but still a tense match that, unfortunately, Athletic never really got into.

Blackwood scored the 1st points of the match with a 3-point penalty kick (accompanied to the news from the Quins speaker system that Cross Keys had just successfully scored their first 3 points). From there it went downhill. A penalty try given to Blackwood for seemingly having the louder fans and more threatening calls towards the good referee. Perhaps a trifle unfair towards the Ref's decision, but then so were the worthy opposition every time the Ref gave a call to Athletic.

Blackwood went into the 2nd half leading 13-3 even after going 1 man down due to a yellow card (which did not go down well with the away fans).

The 2nd half saw Athletic come back with 2 more kicks converted but in the end never looked like scoring a try. The final whistle saw a loss of 13-9. And as much as I may not like the result, I have to admit that the better team won on the day.

To top it off, leaving Five Fields the tannoy from the Quins ground was heard clearly sounding their winning score line of 14-6. The "greater" Carmarthen Team will be celebrating tonight, which can only add to the sense of disappointment for the Athletic followers.
