Yeah metres made can be skewed by a player who spends the whole game running back high balls rather than making gains in the opposition half. I definitely think it has some merits though, just wish I could find the stats to look at!

Rugby has always been terrible for stats. Wiki pages don't get updated, so for someone who is interested in the sport but doesn't know much, there is zero data to look at when trying to see what a player is like. Obviously a stat doesn't tell you everything, but it's very useful and interesting to most.

Yeah its like a pro football focus grade for those into the NFL. Very debatable but the more metrics and stuff brought into rugby the better to be honest.

It's an interesting development... like all these things, it's an imperfect tool but gives some sort of measure - and TBF the methodology is explained. It'll probably be tweaked as time goes on.
It sounds like a rugby version of 'Moneyball', which has had some influence in other sports... and for a relatively poor region such as the Scarlets, could point the way to undervalued players we could afford to sign. Personal judgement from the coaches is still important as well, though! |

I think these are pretty good. Obviously there will be outliers that will be somewhat lucky who end up having great xP but generally I think we’ll find it shows who the underrated and most consistent players are in each side.
I remember reading that Pivac dropped Steff Evans because he got turned over the most in possession, even tho he was a record try scorer, and stuff like xP might help us realise that sooner.
