Paulse heading to France

Sunday May 01 2005

Bok winger signs two-year contract

The services of Springbok winger Breyton Paulse is lost to South African rugby. It was announced on Sunday that the Bok veteran had signed a two-year contract with French championship outfit Clermont.

The club, in making the announcement, said the 29-year-old wing with 51 international caps has the option of a third year.

He has been playing in the Super 12 with the Stormers and is Clermont's second signing in a week - they secured the services of Auch fullback Jean-Baptiste Dambielle last Tuesday.

Paulse, quick as lightning and devastating in space, has the ability to turn almost any play into points, which has made him a South African household name.

For a long time he was thought of as too small for top flight rugby, but by dint of sheer brilliance and weight of tries, he has put those tired worries well behind him.

His refreshing style has dazzled fans from day one, scoring a hat-trick in his first provincial match in 1996 and also his Test debut against Italy in 1999.

He averages just over a try per match at provincial level.

He was the South African Rugby Player of the Year in 2000 enjoys playing soccer and cricket and has released a CD portraying his musical talent.

Paulse is one of seven players who have played 50 test matches or more for South Africa.

He made his WP debut in 1996 against the Falcons (the Eastern Transvaal) and his Stormers debut in 1998 against the Hurricanes. He has played in 66 Super 12 games and has scored 35 tries.

He made his Springbok debut against Italy in 1999 and in his 51 to date has scored 21 tries.

The French club gave no indication when Paulse would join them.
