england had only 1 shot at goal in the entire 120 minutes, italy had 66% possession. In short they were worthy winners. In the shoot out pickford did well, but the italian goalie si a behemoth and has a 68% penalty success rate, thats nuts. Overall Italy had the world class back 5, some world class midfielders and wingers...england didnt quite have the same class but have done very well. Playing all but 1 games at home and allowing massive crowds was also a big advantage for them. Im always baffled as to why england never produce a world class midfielder who can control a game , france spain italy germany seem to produce them enmasse who control possession and dribble past men? This is clearly why gazza is still so lauded hes the only 1 I can remember. the choice of penalty takers was bizarre, where was sterling for starters...theyve lost 7 out 9 9 penalty shoot outs thats not bad luck, thats a combo of bad preparation, bad strategy, pressure and skill
Anyways the lyrics have changed to ...its coming to rome its coming to rome is coming , football comings to rome

Scholes was another. Players like Matt Le Tissier or Chris Waddle could/should have been but Le Tissier played as a 10. Rooney could well have been developed in this role as well but you get more glory as a striker.
I don't think the fast and more physical English Premier League suited such players, and lower leagues become a lot more direct ball or wingers and cross rather than possession and players unpicking defences. Things did change but Premier League teams ended up bringing in - and relying upon - foreign talent to be that playmaker role. Then the lower teams, who have more English players, accept they will never have the ball so rely more and more upon counter-attack and speed. English fans get very restless with ball possession and side-to-side football from what I remember. Things may well have changed now, I'm over 10 years out of touch!

le tissier was never given a fair crack, hoddle had some of that skill, schools was class but not a dribbler, barnes mcmanaman could dribble on the wings, rooney as you say could have become clas midfielder...but none are quite like zidane pirlo platini matthaus etc

Nope, nothing like generated by Italian, French, German and Spanish systems. All have teams willing to pass it around for ages to see what's on before making the killer run and pass. Germany have become much more of a counter-attacking side this Euro I noticed.
I still think emphasis on speed and physicality must have made a difference in England, particularly in player development. The whole box to box midfielder role. Now it seems to be fitness and pressing, which both England's midfielders were very good at but neither seemed good with the ball. Dare I say.... the UK's weather doesn't help. Plus I was always told our pitches were rubbish that didn't favour the close passing game but that's definitely not true anymore at the top level. |

Small, skilful players are usually pushed out to the wing as well (linked to that physical play comment). Italy had a guy 5ft 4 playing in the centre of the park yesterday. Not going to win a header against a 6 ft plus opponent so you kinda have to give it to his feet.

most of the great attacking midfielders are small and light maradona being a classic example..They seem better suited to run all day in midfield....joe allen does similarly for wales... barella veratti insigne are small fellas who run all day, the rest of the side though has massive defenders and 2 big forwards...a good balance

A great spectacle, England did well to reach the final (their best opportunity to win a major trophy, considering they were in the perceived weaker half of the draw and played all their games at home bar one). They were beaten by the better team over 120 minutes, Italy were outstanding in most of their games, their defence has been outstanding (just 3 goals conceded in open play in 3 years), they create opportunities for fun, a joy to watch.
Southgate has done a fantastic job in turning around England’s fortunes since taking over following the 2016 euros and should be praised for it. The BBC bias towards England throughout the competition has been shocking, not only the pundits but also the commentators. “It’s going to Rome, it’s going to Roma, it’s going, football’s going to Rome”. It’s a shame that a wonderful night of football was marred by the scenes of fans pushing passed security and getting into the stadium without tickets, plus the booing of the Italian national anthem and then the racial abuse suffered by the 3 players who missed the penalties.

Italy were fated to win, weren't they? It was the 'Wales factor' wot won it:
1958: Brazil beat Wales. Brazil win World Cup 2016: Portugal beat Wales. Portugal win Euros 2021: Italy beat Wales. Italy win Euros. Wales have only made three finals, and every time the winners beat them at some stage. Spooky, or what?

So in some sense there is an argument for us consistently being the second best team of all time?

I read that as we were runners up/2nd best team in those 3 tournaments after marginal defeats to the eventual champions

What a complete and utter embarassment some of these pretend patriotic england fans are...smashed up part of wembley, enddangered lives, stole seats, spread covid, booed the anthem, booed italy throughout , then turned out to be lousy losers too and finished it all off by racially abusing their own players. what an absolute shower, weed out the culprits ban them forever. In terms of priorities as a proud welshman winning a football match for wales comes an infinite distance behind behaving like good people, showing good sportsmanship, respecting safety , respecting the fans, the players the opposition and no discrimination....Surely upholding those values is more patriotic than totally disgracing your country like this mob of muppets.
