All the crémants from France taste nicely and come in at extremely reasonable prices.

Just back from a couple of weeks in Canada and for what it’s worth, here are a few thoughts Syrah’s, Jasper - Oak Bay, from Okanagan Valley, BC (British Columbia). 2019 Pinot Noir 13.9% iirc. Probably my favourite of the trip. The Elk Wellington may have had something to do with it, though. On the Rocky Mountaineer - Sumac Ridge Pinot Gris and a Cab Sav/Merlot plus Pinot Noir iirc were supplied liberally. Very drinkable Our local tour guide helpfully informed us that in Niagara on the Lake, some of the better nearby wineries sell bottles only at their shop and nowhere else. They don’t even ship it within Canada. Whether the two we got were included in that or not, I’m uncertain. They were Wayne Gretzky 99 2020 Baco Noir 13%, Ontario, aged in whisky barrels (not come across this grape type before) and Thirty Bench Winemaker’s Blend Riesling 2019, Ontario, using oldest vines, more pleasant than many a Riesling I’ve had. Good Natured, 2020, blend of Merlot & Petit Verdot, 13.9%, from Kelowna, which is the 2nd largest wine producing area of BC. It tasted remarkably well after being shaken about on a 3 day train journey from Jasper to Toronto. White Bear 2019 Sauvignon Blanc 12.5% from Okanagan Valley. Named after the 21 million acre largest rainforest in the world. It’s home to grizzly bears, coastal wolves, salmon and the rare white Kermode or “Spirit Bear” that exists only here. Inniskillin Pinot Noir from Montague Vineyard, one of Ontario’s better known and longest established wineries, 2016 13% black cherry and strong flavoured. Most enjoyable. St Hubertus Chasselas from South Kelowna, 2021. At 10.8%, it is easy drinking and pairs well with a fondue or raclette, or sushi etc. Surprised by this, pleasantly so. Henry of Pelham from Ontario was a good accompaniment to the in flight catering. Not sure what Canadian wines are easily available in the UK. |

Going through the Rockies was an assault on the senses. Round every corner there was yet another wondrous site to take in. While it might seem silly reading it back, it is tiring trying absorb the incredible dramatic geography and geology of the land mass. The 2,000 miles trip at about 30mph ave speed from Jasper to Toronto offered plenty of interest to view and the catering on the train was pretty decent. The pancakes and maple syrup were a personal VP fave for breakfast and so much maple syrup. The journey could be so much quicker but for freight trains taking priority, so little double track and having to reverse into some stations for long layovers to refill fuel, food and water etc. Canada is apparently the world leader in Nickel mining, Potash mining and Cranberry growing, possibly other things, too. We saw the first two but not the fruit. As well as the mountains etc., there was wildlife aplenty. We saw 3 brown bears, all near parking spots and tourist rubbish bins so not so wild wildlife. The bear proof catches on bins are quite a surprise at first. Elk, a couple of different types of eagle, bison (farms) and even a sunbathing beaver. Top spot went to seeing a moose get out of a small lake and head into the forest too quick to get my camera out, sadly. Lake Louise is lovely but scarred by an overbearing design blight, IMO, of a hotel. We met someone who stayed there later in our trip and they said it was a poor hotel. Really glad to have done it. Would we do it again? Probably too much of an endurance test to repeat, although the idea of doing it to see a snow covered landscape does Appel. The days on the Rocky Mountaineer were long and can be unpredictably so. Our overnight in Kamloops was troubled by train noise. We were late enough at about 2000 but heard of one recent journey when they arrived after midnight All hotels in the town are by the train tracks and those freight trains rumble on through the night. Some sound insulation would be an enormous help to the hotels. A friend said that Kamloops makes Crewe look classy. It’s also on the edge of their desert. The Alaskan option from Rocky Mountaineer sounds easier with later starts and earlier finishes.

In answer to Reesy’s point re Canadian wine, not even Majestic offer it. Amazon, on the other hand, do. However, there’s nothing below £20 and not much below £30 so it’s only for the curious with a few bob to indulge on what is a bit of a punt. There’s an ice cider in amongst them for about £15 for a 375ml, iirc. I’d heard of their ice wine but not the cider version.
It’s not a cheap place to eat or drink, in general. Plenty of bargains, by comparison, if you go to wine shops (no alcohol in supermarkets. We got a funny look when we asked where the wine aisle was), you can get decent priced wine without the seemingly larger than usual restaurant mark up. In Ontario, you have to go to LCBO shops. Liquor Board of Control Ontario, to buy booze. It’s similar in other states, too, I imagine. The winery shops in Niagara on the Lake and their wines not sold or shipped anywhere else is a great idea. For less than the price of a bottle of “average” wine at a restaurant, you can get two vg quality bottles. |

Currently enjoying a 2000 St Emilion bought en vrac (in bulk 11L/24L/32L containers unless you bring your own) and bottled in about 2002/3. Paid no more than €4.50 a litre. This one had a cork that survived and didn’t taint the wine. About 12.5% strength. Very pleasant indeed.
