Is he really as good as Everton think? All I see is a manager who plays pretty football but whose team constantly struggles with relegation.
He had no money at Wigan but he'll have little more at Everton where Moyes constantly worked on a shoestring. It'll be interesting to see he he gets on. Similarly, Stoke get rid of Pulis and bring in Hughes?? Any difference? I reckon it's all down to good fortune. Had Swansea not picked up Michu then, without doubt, they'd have been in the relegation fight as there were so few points between 8th and relegation. Similarly, had a team like Stoke found such a gem instead of the appalling Kenwyne Jones then who knows? BTW, I read that Jones is on his way to Cardiff. Good luck with that! I do see Martinez as talented but am not quite sure Everton is the right next step for him: they are a more rugged side through Moyes' leadership and also it will be a very different challenge for him attempting to get into the top four with them, which is how he'll be judged. I really don't see it happening and so don't see him succeeding, unfortunately, as I like the person and his outlook on football.
Stokes parting ways with Pullis was an odd one: I think they'll end up going down in the next couple of seasons. As always, you're looking at at least two of the three that have come up to go straight back down. Have to hand it to Swansea and also Norwich, who haven't taken as much credit as Swansea, but both have done well in establishing themselves in the division. For the Swans, they simply must hang on to Michu (which I won't get any prizes for stating) and this could be season-defining for them. And then the return of Mourinho to Chelsea combined with a [slight] change at Man U could make things a bit more interesting at the top. I found last season very uninteresting as a neutral for some reason - Man U too dominant, too many players I've never heard of, maybe my tastes are just changing - so lets hope it's a bit more interesting next season.

Sensible points, as usual. Can't see Martinez doing better at Everton than Moyes; no way will Moyes do better at Man U than Ferguson (what an act to follow - impossible, really); Hughes instead of Pulis at Stoke because they want to 'change direction'??? - Forgive me, but both have always emphasised the physical over the skilful - so no real change. Just maybe a new face (Hughes) will have a positive effect, for a while. I think Mourhinio should have remembered the old saying - 'never go back'. He's good, but unlikely to improve on what he achieved the first time around. |

hughes has released 7 players today . with his track record the replacements will be useless and expensive.

As an Everton supporter I was so pleased that Hughes got the Stoke job!! As for Martinez I have mixed feelings but let's give the man a chance. The key for me is how many key players he can keep at Everton.

with the millions he made from man city and QPR, i would have retired and never bothered with football again. apart from his role with wales and a small cameo with blackburn he's been quite s**t as a manager

He was with Blackburn for a few seasons and did a decent job for them. QPR is the only place he's really failed. |

He may actually do a decent job at Stoke. He couldn't cope with being given an unlimited budget at Man City and bought some howlers (similarly at QPR), but he was able to spot a bargain at Blackburn with Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy amongst others. No surprises, apart perhaps Cameron Jerome, with the 7 players released but I'd have added Kenwyne Jones to the list. |

And Arsenal possibly ready to "spend big":
Getting a little bit more enthused about the forthcoming season now: it's not quite as clear cut who will come out on top, as in recent years. But then I've said/thought this before.

He did buy some decent players for City as well as a few flops. Kompany, Zabaleta, De Jong, Barry, Lescott, Tevez and Toure played a big part in their title winning squad. Hughes is no world beater but I don't think he deserves the ridicule he seems to be getting at the moment. One awful season out of 12 or 13 suggests he ain't that bad. |

Ha! Reports say he's going to bring Lescott to Stoke so perhaps he's learned bugger all!

im a blackburn fan, and he did ok. lot of loan players e.g. santa cruz,Bellamy, bently and mccarthy all started as loanees, then they were purchased. aprt from winning the joking cup he managed to get us into the top 10 once i do believe. i suppose he has done well in jobs wheer there hasnt been any high expectations, he might be ok at stoke. |
