I hear that pontyberem could be the Merthyr of the lower leagues next season with silly money being offered to players to join them,

There is a lot of silly money going round at the moment. Even in the bottom divisions. You can't blame the players, especially the ones with young families.

I'm sick of it

It needs to stop, players are driving all round South Wales and refusing to play if they don't get extra money for this, that and the other.

It is spoiling Welsh rugby, young players are ignored, because they bring an older (in some cases old) players.

What can we do about it.....well

A-stop international Ticket allocation to any team found paying players(it is a main source of income for some clubs!!!)
B-relegate a club to the lower divisions
C-ban officials from rugby for x years

I honestly doubt very much if anything will happen, but one can see the outcome with some clubs paying a fortune to players, they are doing well & when the club is near bankrupt, and those "loyal" players leave they go straight down the leagues again.

Ego, fame in the village (area), arrogance, showing off, and many more reasons.

Sometimes rugby does come into it, not often.

I have been told that players have earned around £2-£4k a season, basic and sometimes a bonus. I know of a club who's star players had a car for the season, plus a certain amount of petrol.

Many will not believe this but the regions are run like a business and more or less correctly, it's the other grades of rugby that need reviewing.

Premiership rugby was a stepping stone to regional, until some clubs started recruiting fringe players & ex internationals from the everywhere with big salaries.

AND WE WONDER WHAT IS WRONG WITH WELSH RUGBY !!!!

For the record, during my brief playing career for Brynaman 2nds I received nothing more than a plated meal of spam and chips and a couple of beer tokens...

All against the WRU rules of course. Does 'Boom and Burst' spending ever prove itself wrong ?

Actually if you declare your paying players it's not technically outside the WRU rules, but you do lose all your WRU funding.

It may all be agains wru rules which are there for good reason. But how does a club progress the leagues if they need to attract players. the oly pity is the isnt promotion and relegation right through the system similar to English Rugby

My (very successful) youth team was quickly broken up by boys being tempted away by cash.
Went into our third year of youth and about 10 boys had offers to play for money from about 5 different clubs.

Measure your success by where they eventually progress too. Junior and youth system are vital - not sure the wru understand that - ehat did your senior secion o to keep them?

Bit of a strange one. The only thing they could do to keep ( most of )them would be to pay them,

Last season Pontypool had one player who’s salary was more than my club’s total operating budget ( not to be confused with playing budget..which doesn’t exist).

John Plimmer from J&J Motors did once ask me how much I thought it would cost him to get Jonah Lumo to play a season for Tumble. I'm not sure whether he was joking or not.
