Heroic it might have been, but the soldiers involved were occupying another people's land in order to exploit its wealth, and the Welsh that were involved were sacrificing their lives for a voracious empire which a few centuries earlier had occupied and annexed our own country.

If you want fighters to admire unconditionally then look up the St Patrick's Brigade who fought in the Mexican - American war, on the Mexican side. They were poor  Irish immigrants who had mostly emigrated to escape the potato famine and been recruited into the U.S. army. However when they saw how the U.S. army treated the Mexican peasants who were fellow Catholics they swapped sides. They did this knowing full well that they would have no chance against  the better armed U.S. army but they would not fight against their consciences. Those who did not die in battle were hanged in public as a warning to anyone else of a similar inclination. One of their leaders was hanged the day after his legs had been amputated. None of them recanted.

Colour Sergeant Bourne: It's a miracle.
Lieutenant John Chard: If it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer Henry point 45 caliber miracle.
Colour Sergeant Bourne: And a bayonet, sir, with some guts behind.

The Mexicans and the Irish were united by religion.
At the time of Rourke's Drift, many in the Christian Church regarded blacks as sub-human and the missing link between men and monkeys. Blacks were there to be tamed and ruled by Whites. Whites were there to conquer and suppress blacks in order to educate them.

I don't prescribe to these views, but this may explain the different perception Omri.

Just as well that they didn't put too much effort into the education then otherwise the first thing they would have done was to try to wipe out their language.

Quite topical that about language. Did you see the report today about a Welsh prisoner from North Wales being denied the right to speak on the phone in Welsh ? Seems like the Saes are still at it !

As a gentle aside, this film is also remembered fondly by me for the topless dance scenes at the beginning.
It lingered in the memory for a while and then Glenda Jackson did the full Monty in DH Lawrence's Women in Love (Sunday nights, after the South Bank show normally) and life was never the same again after her.

Anyway sorry Omri, I drifted there, you are right, we had no right to be there getting speared and all shot up by the locals.

A couple of additions to you're version is that in fact you could hardly call the brigade Irish, their leader was for sure, and yes they were mainly Roman Catholic, but the battalion was made up of all sorts of backgrounds and countries of origin.
It's also important to note that they were all guaranteed Mexican citizenship for fighting with the Mexicans, most had no citizendship at all at the time.
People rarely sacrifice themsleves for no cause whatsoever.
