Following on from the Clancy thread, are you allowed to tackle a player in the air when they have jumped while running with the ball or do you have to wait until he has landed?

E.g. I'd love to see Ashton get smashed when doing his elaborate diving celebration but would it actually be legal?

We could see frogging tactics emerge if the answer is "no"....

For his first try an Italian followed him in and gave him a shove.

I'd follow him in and do a swan dive on top of him, elbow first LOL

Fire in the hole here, but what's the problem with Ashtons celebration?
You lied to me Edward. You lied to me. There is a Swansea... and other places.

Technically you can NOT tackle a player whose feet are off the ground, but that would make tackling a "running" player illegal !

10.(e) Dangerous tackling. A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously.
Sanction: Penalty kick
A player must not tackle (or try to tackle) an opponent above the line of the shoulders even
if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders. A tackle around the opponent’s neck or
head is dangerous play.
Sanction: Penalty kick
A ‘stiff-arm tackle’ is dangerous play. A player makes a stiff-arm tackle when using a stiffarm
to strike an opponent.
Sanction: Penalty kick
Playing a player without the ball is dangerous play.
Sanction: Penalty kick
A player must not tackle an opponent whose feet are off the ground.
Sanction: Penalty kick
.

But I think common sense must prevail here or we're in danger of running out with a round ball !

I'v e complained about this before, but maybe not in the ref's thread - far too often, IMHO, players approaching a ruck take out defnders who have not yet reached the ruck, being either behind it and not bound, or to the side.

Refs hardly ever penalise these plauyers for what seems to me to be blatant obstruction.

Why not?

That is called "influencing the contact area" & is actively coached by top level teams ... it gives a split second to "BOB" or "CENTRE" the ball on the floor ...

BOB = "B****cks Over Ball"
CENTER THE BALL = BOB! Wink

Doesn't make it legal  though!
Referees are currently being made aware of this new coaching technique!

Thanks for that - it seems to me to be one of the most common 'obstructions' in the modern game. If it is illegal, as you confirm, then I just hope refs become more aware of the offence as it is extremely anoying and frustrating!

Would love to see somebody do to Ashton what was done to Will Carling in the Midlesex 7's - he was about to score and the tackler caught him, held him up and carried him into touch in goal Smile
what was your flash forward?
