We're short in the back row. I'm guessing Gravelle is covering there.

I guess so yeah. strange  what's wrong with gav thomas then? thought we had plenty of back row cover?

According to the Scarlets site there are six players unavailable to the back row

I was cringing on Sunday as Arwel made his appearance off the bench towards the end, when the game had been won may I add. How many of us felt like jeering, but applauded gently!!

Surely this would be the right time to bring Ioan cunningham through the ranks. This in my opinion is one of Gareths major failings.

why play someone who is not used to playing in that position Aled Gravelle (i know he started his rugby career in the back row, but the difference in rules etc, means he is vulernable to making mistakes which could cost us penalties), when you have a competent back rower playing in the semi-pro's who i think could make the step up, especially against the worst team in the league....

Now if I had said that about Bowen there'd be loads of posts baying for my blood

I heard that gavin t has hurt his ribs, its a bit of a kick in the backsid for gav quinnell if a hooker is covering the back row instead of him what do you all think

Still no sign of Andy Powell then. I thought his injury was described as needing 2-3 recovery time. I expected him to be back for this one.

Scarlets v Borders (Fri)
CELTIC LEAGUE

Stradey Park, Llanelli
Friday, 17 December
Kick-off: 1905 GMT

All Blacks prop Dave Hewett is set to make his Scarlets debut in Friday's Celtic League game with the Borders.

The 33-year-old joined last month, but was ineligible for the Heineken Cup.

The Llanelli side's depleted back-row resources have been further strained as Dave Hodges is ruled out following a collision with Kenny Logan last week.

Captain Simon Easterby (ribs), Scott Quinnell (knee) and Andy Powell (ankle) are also injured, whilst another back-row man, Ian Boobyer, is suspended.

LAST LEAGUE MEETING
3 September:
Young flanker Jonathan Mills, who is not in the Heineken Cup squad, is likely to return to the side.

Lock Chris Wyatt covered the back row when Hodges was injured against Glasgow.

fair play to you salmidach, that is a valid point about bringing cunningham onto the bench, also a good point about quinnell not being considered. could the reason be the cup game on saturday for llanelli rfc. there are quite a few of us looking forward to the possibility of a trip to cardiff in may. anyway back to friday, great to see mcbryde back and i'm looking forward to seeing what hewitt is made of.

You can only add players to the Euro squad once the group stage is over.

Yeah but this is Dunvant a Division 2 west club, when i watched them beaten by felinfoel, how the mightly have fallen... we could have brought cunningham upto the scarlets on the bench and if he didn't play then play him on the saturday in the "turks" side....

I have to agree that if we are serious about developing youngster's then this is an opportuinity to get them some experience to help us in the future

The more I think about this team the more I am disappointed by it. What an opportunity missed. I haven't seen Cunningham play but I would expect at least one of the premiership sides to have a promising back row player who could have sat on the bench. This isn't doing Gravelle any favours either.

i looked into a crystal ball and this is what i saw.  some semi-pro players playing on friday night meaning they can't play saturday.  dunvant beating us saturday.  gareth jenkins being lynched on this site for not keeping players for the dunvant game
it could be that we haven't got cover on saturday and need all the semi-pro squad???

We've got 6 back row players out. Gavin Thomas has got bad ribs so thats why he isnt playing. Our Backrow looks really poor, we could be turn over a lot in this game as we havent got a 7 to scrap on the floor for the ball!

Utterly and totally agree !! The fact that this is potentially the only game of the season when we can blood a few new players and yet have almost totally ignored the chance speaks volumes about where we are as a team. It must be completely demoralising for the players of our so called `Feeder` clubs to see this chance passed by. What Ceiron Thomas, for example, has to do to get a chance is beyond me, at least he can kick reliably

What would have been sensible would have been to drop the off-form players TO the semi pro team so essentially the team against Dunvant isn't weakened at all.

Do they have the 5 game minimum thing in for the cup this year?

if i'm not mistaken, only two scarlets players can play for llanelli in any one game

I think that's a pretty harsh comment about the back row, Jon Mills has been very impressive since joining us. Daffyd is getting back to his best and Wyatt has played there quite alot, I agree there is no specialist 7 playing but we still should be able to secure the ball!!!!
