Saturday 2nd half, Foden put up an up and under, Liam couldn't quite get there to field the ball, and the ball went forward from his foot.

Iestyn was retreating and was about 5m in front of Liam and the ball hit Iestyn.

To me, Iestyn made no attempt to play the ball, and as the ball shot forward very quickly couldn't get out of the way.

Has the ref got to give a penalty in that case ? Or does he have any discretion ?

At the time I felt that it showed no feel for the game.

Comments please all you refs out there.

Thanks.

I think that Roland thru experience tends to go for the rules rather than an empathy for the game...probably to cover his own arse

Technically Iestyn WAS offside, & by the fact that the ball struck him, it denied Northampton any advantage so the Referee was duty bound to penalise him.
Look at it the other way, If Iestyn had played the ball with intent to stop an advantage, it would have most certainly been a yellow card.

Agree with the yellow, but it was accidental in my view. Iestyn was only offside when the ball hit him, he was not retreating following a previous kick ahead by us, and I felt he could do little about it.

A rule that needs looking at then !

What would have been the ruling had Liam kicked the ball forward and it struck Iestyn who happened to be standing in front of him?

Iestyn was offside when the ball was kicked ! NOT when it hit him !
He had a duty to get back onside & avoid the ball hitting him !
He would have known the law as it has not changed since I started playing in the late 70's!

2nd part of question .. Offside too .. Penalty .. Sorry!

Accidental offside ONLY when a player runs into a team mate infront of him ....

& before anyone edits the words "Vets Rugby" in there, I should have added "Senior Rugby" Wink
