    Posted: 28 June 2016 at 9:01am
Beirne, 24 from Co. Kildare, has this week arrived at the Scarlets from Irish province Leinster.

The promising young second row, who can also play in the back row, made his way through the age grade ranks at Leinster before being awarded with a place in the province's academy programme.

A British & Irish Cup winner with Leinster, in 2013, and a Leinster Schools Senior Cup medal winner with Clongowes Wood College, in 2010, the 6' 6" second row will bring ball playing capabilities as well as a physical presence to the Scarlets pack.

All four senior Leinster appearances have been against Welsh regions, including a cameo from the replacements bench in Leinster's victory over Scarlets in October 2015.

Beirne represented Leinster Under 19s and 20s before going on to make ten appearances for Ireland U20s, including representing his country at the World Rugby U20s Championship. He has also represented Ireland 7s.

Commenting on the news Scarlets General Manager of Rugby Jon Daniels said: "Tadhg is an exciting young talent who we hope will continue to develop and progress here at the Scarlets. He will add strength in depth to the back 5 of the pack.

"He has made a brave move to leave Ireland to pursue a new challenge and further his rugby career but he's an intelligent well rounded young man who I'm sure will thrive in our environment."

Beirne added; "I was particularly impressed with what the region has to offer in terms of facilities off the field here at Parc y Scarlets when I came over to meet Jon, Wayne and the team. Scarlets have a wealth of talent and were unlucky to miss out on a play-off place last season but I'm excited by the ambition and am really looking forward to getting pre-season underway."

Was told while back that Beirne was WQ.

If he's played 7's for Ireland guessing he is tied to them.

the Irish have the 'wolfhounds' as their A team so unless he's played for them he should be ok

Looks well rounded in that video.
Lock pool now: First choice- Ball, Bulbring, Bernardo.
Second choice- Rawlins, Price.
Development- Bernie, Helps(?).

Reflects Wayne's style.Tall/rangy mobile forward with good running skills (7's player). Its also all about budget of course with Scarlets. Not a bad signing and only 24.

Seems promising from Leinster fans views online. Game time limited by Triggs a NZ Maori.

Not a fan of developing players for other countries.

Sure there would be a wq available of similar talent.
Aslong as we beat the English, its ok.

I thought we lacked grunt up front?? We need big tough bodies, not rangy athletic ones. Pack will not get our backs enough ball....

We need to look at the NZ pack, all athletes, and not look at the past.

God forbid England are following them look at their pack. We are now falling behind them as quick as the pound is falling.
Be careful when you pick up the stick.........IT MAY BE THE WRONG END!!!!!!!!!!

this.

New Zealand, 1-15, all offer pace and a good skill set. All players comfortable on the ball. this is what Pivac is obviously trying to build.

It's his way of play. The law changes of the maul puts less emphasis on power and IMO is an attempt to speed up the game.

I think our back row and lock situation is looking ok...possibly stronger than last year:
Lock:
Ball / Bullbring
Bernardo / Rawlins
Price / Beirne / Helps

Backrow:
6: Shingler / Tom Phillips / Condy / Rawlins / Beirne
7: Barclay / Cubby / Will Boyd / Shaun Evans / Josh MacLeod
8: Allen / Condy / Barclay / Tom Phillips

*included players in every position they offer us.

some decent options there that give us mobility. We will however need to be better at the breakdown in the absence of cubby and barclay. hopefully Boyd / evans /macleaod are developing nicely.

Evans and MacLeod aren't natural 7s, both have been moved across but neither are effective breakdown 7s in the mould of Cubby, not by a long stretch!
You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.

moved across when?
everytime i've seen them play, they played 7 and played well at 7 - especially macleod.
may have seen evans play 8 once due to injuries.

I saw Macleod play for Llanelli Rfc against Ponty last season and he  dominated the breakdown,a real shame he got injured and was out long term
