If you also add in the fact theese people dont pay contributions or taxes then they also get free nhs and free prescriptions. I would though question this £26000 quoted. how does one get that much? are we talking single parents mainly? whats the breakdown of that figure? say they get sickness for say £90 then free rent say £110, then child benefit , how much is that? say £20 a child (total guess) thats another £100...then is all other household bills paid? Ive read figures of £45000 so whats the breakdown?
Don't forget free nhs dental care, then if your kids are at school and need a computer, yup you can have one of them too (not any old PC - top dollar new laptops - of course you need a phone line to use the internet of course, and then internet connection too), working tax credits based on earnings (so if they aren't working at all, they'd get top whack payouts - per person). The list is endless, I kid you not! Shocked

and when they get too old to look after themselves they won't have their house taken off them to pay for it.Angry
Or, if they eventually get a job when their kids have all grown up, they get the right to buy the property outright, and of course the rent that has been paid for that duration is calculated (even though the council has paid the rent over the years), and then the house if offered to them at an unbelieveably low rate (usually, a fraction of the actual market value, in some cases as little as 50%)! Shocked
You can clearly see why the attitude is "I'm no better off getting a job, or coming off benefits.......I'll actually be worse off!" Shocked

Until this figure was released the other week, I had no idea how much an individual was able to claim! I knew you could more or less claim for pretty much anything, right down to a new pair of pants, but I never in a million years thought the figure would be that high! and that is why so many people are now angry/irrate about the whole social benefit system, rightly so too, given the economic situation, and the shortage of money! Shocked

At least two of your points prove how stupid it was to sell off council houses in the first place:

1. the point that people on benefits can end up in a new house on the same estate os others who've had to pay for their house - wouldn't happen if councils had been allowed to build enough houses/flats themselves
2. the point that these same people will be able to buy their house in future, even if they didn't pay any rent - would not be possible if council houses weren't sold.

And to whom do we owe the "sell council houses" policy? You've guessed it - THATCHER!

i REST MY CASE.
I share no-one's ideas. I have my own.
