Although rugby is - by a distance - the sport I love the most, I also take an interest in many others, including football.

During the late 1970s, I lived and worked in Liverpool at a time when the Reds were title winners in four  seasons out of five, from 1975-6 to 1979-80, as well as three European cups. It also became my favourite English city, though that had more to do with other aspects such as the locals' sense of humour, etc.

LFC went into a relative decline in the 1990s, until re-energised by the brilliant French manager Gerard Houllier, who modernised the players' attitude to how to be professional, as well as improving the training facilities etc. Houllier, though, is not only being mourned as a great manager, but also as a thoroughly decent human being. It was interesting to discover from the obituaries that he had lived and worked as an assistant teacher in Liverpool as a young man, and even wrote a dissertation on deprivation in the city as part of his degree studies.

This is one of the best tributes I have read:

“You cannot reason a man out of what he never reasoned himself into.” (Jonathan Swift)
