OK so Eddie has named his squad. Some surprises - only 2 tight heads, 2 scrum halves & Piers Francis to cover as 3rd 10. Mako & Nowell named despite being currently injured. Ludlam & Bath winger McNoccachie named.

You know what, I'm going to say that's a blow as I think he was getting on fine. Now it's Biggar at 10. Although he has his strengths it's a different game plan which was not effective recently.

Bit of a blow for the Ospreys too, not that he would have played too much rugby this season but he would have played all their European Cup matches & derbies.

Always a silver lining I suppose, not that I wish to take joy in an injury.

If Sinker or Cole pick up an HIA it will be interesting to see what happens

Very good point. I am thinking that Marler or Genge must be able to cover tight head.

Now whilst I know any replacement that is called up can't play for 48 hours after being called up, & that they replace the injured person. Does this count for front rows?

Yes I believe so. HIA's will cause huge issues at this tournament. Not being able to play for 48 hours is not such an issue as with travelling and recovery I can't see anyone from Europe/South Africa being ready to play inside 48 hours. Eddie will have a plan B if one of tight heads is unavailable for 7-10 days particularly during the pool stages. If they go down during the knock out stages I see a replacement being the only option. With front rows in particular they won't be allowed to go into a game without 3 recognised front row replacements so I am thinking one of the loose heads/hookers must be proficient on the tight head.

That's what I thought, the other side of the coin is that if someone takes a knock in training then a call has to be made very quickly.

I've played a bit of rugby locally at tight head, are there any hookers on here who can tell me if there is a big difference between playing the 2 positions at scrum time? Obviously they wouldn't hook for the ball but is there much difference?

I was a full back so totally unqualified to answer!!!! This topic does, of course, throw up an interesting dilemma awaiting to happen. Imagine a team with only 2 fit specialists in a front row position experiencing an injury to one of those specialists in the captains run or even worse the pre match warm up. Even if a replacement could be found in time where would the 48 hour rule be? A game of uncontested scrums? Postponement? Forfeiture of game?

Looking forward to watching NZ v Aus on Saturday morning. Obviously writing off NZ is a very dangerous thing to do but they are under more pressure now than at any time in the past 8-10 years. All areas of the team appear a little unsettled with the front row not firing ( Franks dropped from the 23), Retallick injured, Savea playing out of position at 6, Barrett moved from 10 due to his poor goal kicking, unsettled centre combinations & new wingers being tried ( both Smith & Ioane dropped).

If the unthinkable happens & they lose on Saturday the public response will be massive. This is a real test of Hansen's undoubted ability. As for the game in Cardiff I fear that despite all the talk of how much depth Wales have created the reality may start to show - in many positions we are an injury away from calamity - loose head, tight head, AWJ, No 8, scrum half, outside half, 13. With these shortcomings in mind Gatland should really think of giving gametime to Rhys Carre, Leon Brown, Cory Hill, a no 8 & Scott at 13. What he does at 9/10 is anyone's guess if Tomas Williams withdraws & Patchell is deemed not ready.

Suddenly this strength in depth is being tested to its limits. We have no magical answer at 10 but we do have a tried and tested solution at 9 waiting in the wings. Time methinks for the WRU to get real.

I agree about our depth. That has been exaggerated by the media hyperbole
Though I think the front row has a fair bit of back up, its awj, 8, back up 9, 10 and 13 are the weakest back ups
scott w if fit could be an essential back up. wainwright navidi back up 8s. tomos w looks a handy 9 but aled im not so sure...jarod tidy club player but unproven...awj irreplacable. when rested its ball as the hard man, hill the mobile lock, beard huge solid presence not as mobile as others.

Its a brutal sport and the world cup may come down to which of the heavyweights has the most men still standing
if it comes down to size physicality and depth then the boks and the saes are favourites
